Who knew treadmills could be so fun? This classic, viral music video features such a simple yet quirky concept, but with choreography that blows the mind apart. After 17 attempts, OK Go was finally able to capture a single, continuous shot of the entire impressive choreographed performance. Unlike some of the other videos here, this doesn’t have any deep, significant relevance to the song’s lyrics, but… who cares!

The fact that among all modes, these two were chosen as the pillars of our system, resulted from a predominance in the use of these two scales from the Baroque Period onwards. To put it differently, the modes above share all the same notes, but since they start from a different degree of the major scale, each mode has a slightly different construction, and feel to it.

There are lots of reasons why tuning is hard. You might be hampered by a poorly made guitar, or by a guitar that’s not set up correctly, or by old, worn-out strings, or by changes in temperature or humidity, or just by a lack of patience or time. At least you can be secure in the knowledge that some of your tuning struggles are due to the basic unfairness of the universe, and not just the limitations of your ears or your equipment.

Tom Hamilton’s signature riff may be “Sweet Emotion,” but there are so many other songs where his sheer bass heroics are overshadowed by Joe Perry’s monster riffs. If you listen closely to one of the mid-song guitar solos in “Walk This Way,” counting off six beats after the line, “Just give me a kiss,” you’ll hear Hamilton’s gorgeous slide up the neck up to a trill-like sequence at the octave, ending with a three-note chromatic run to the major third above it.

With all of Logic’s inredible instruments, producers often rely on the sound of the samples right out of the box, here’s how to make them more interesting.

One of the most valuable skills a musician can have is being able to identify musical intervals by ear. Once you can comfortably pick out musical intervals as you hear them, you are officially on your way towards the upper echelons of musical ability. But, let’s step back for a moment. What is an interval?

Berg understood that these mechanical principles were only techniques to aid the communication of emotion, rather than ends in themselves. While freeing himself from the conventionality of earlier compositional techniques, he also relaxed many of the dogmatic rules handed down by his teacher (and serialism’s doctrinaire evangelist) Arnold Schoenberg.

Labeling tracks and keeping a detailed record of what’s happening during a recording session is crucial for saving time. Don’t do this during the initial recording process, which should flow without periodic interruptions, but rather when you’re mixing the material later on. Take a small amount of time to label each track or input before and after you record each piece. And keep handwritten notes in a notebook (or at least on a separate screen other than the one used to record).

The integration of music into fundamental community practices (as opposed to sectioning music out as a separate subject area) may contribute to how many African musical traditions have gone largely unstudied by foreigners. In other words, music is daily life in many parts of Africa. But as a result, many African music educators do not permit or encourage written documentation of their work, as it is understood to dilute the lived experience. This in itself contributed to Afrocentric music continuing to be undervalued in the canon (largely upheld by traditions in the West), despite prominence across mass populations worldwide.

We love this project for its sheer ingenuity, its “think global, act local” mentality, and because Vinyltryk innovatively used custom-designed slides rather than plain text in its project description.

If you know you’ll have Tuesday nights free, then take that opportunity to call it a “music-making night.” Or if you have early mornings open, schedule that time for your songwriting sessions.

A common misconception is that 808s have to be low and boomy, even when you’re writing. You can often make things easier on yourself by writing them in an easier-to-hear octave, then shifting them down once you’re happy with your note choices.
